Overview:

Andrographis is a plant that is native to South Asian countries. It is an erect annual herb extremely bitter in taste in all parts of the plant body. The plant is known in north-eastern India as Maha-tita, literally “king of bitters”.

Andrographis paniculata is a medicinal plant used in many countries. Its major constituents are diterpenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols and andrographolides.

Andrographis is frequently used for preventing and treating the common cold and flu (influenza).

In Ayurveda it is known as Kalmegh or Kalamegha, meaning “dark cloud”.

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

The primary medicinal component of Andrographis is andrographolide. It has a very bitter taste, is a colorless crystalline in appearance, and is called a “diterpene lactone”. The leaves contain the highest amount of andrographolide (2.39%), the most medicinally active phytochemical in the plant, while the seeds contain the lowest.

Andrographolides enhance the immune system by increasing white blood cell count.  In addition, it releases interferon and increases the activity of the lymph system.  Interferon is a protein made by cells in response to viruses that act as an antiviral agent.

Applications of Andrographis Paniculata

  • Andrographis extract can be used to treat sore throat, coughs, swollen tonsils, bronchitis, and allergies.

  • Andrographis extract can be used for “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), and it has a thrombolytic property that prevents heart disease and diabetes.

  • Andrographis extract has Vermicidal property that kills intestinal worms.

The species is a native of tropical South-East Asia and occurs throughout hotter parts of India. It is widely distributed throughout the plains of India from Uttar Pradesh to Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

It can be cultivated on a wide range of soils from loam to lateritic soils with moderate fertility.

With the onset of the monsoon, the plant grows luxuriantly and starts flowering with the moderation in temperature during September. Flowering and fruiting continue up to December. 

If the crop is raised as an annual crop and planted during the month of May June, it should be harvested by the end of September.
